In one column are the names of more than 70 enslaved people at Harvard: Venus, Juba, Cesar, Cicely. They are only first names, or sometimes no name at all — “the Moor” or “a little boy” — of people and stories that have been all but forgotten.
In another column are the names of the ministers and presidents and donors of Harvard who enslaved them in the 17th and 18th centuries: Increase Mather, Gov. John Winthrop, William Brattle. These full names are so powerful and revered they still adorn buildings today.
The contrasting lists are arguably the most poignant part of a 134-page reporton Harvard University’s four centuries of entanglements with slavery and its legacy.
And they are just an appendix.
The report by a committee of Harvard faculty members, released on Tuesday, is Harvard’s effort to begin redressing the wrongs of the past, as some other universities have been doing for decades.
As part of the process, the university’s governing corporation has pledged $100 million in part to create an endowed “Legacy of Slavery Fund” that would allow scholars and students to bring Harvard’s connections to slavery into the light for generations to come.
Experts said the amount of money Harvard was committing for such a project was rare, if not unprecedented for an educational institution. It rivals the $100 million pledged by leaders of the Jesuit conference of priests for racial reconciliation and to benefit descendants of enslaved people at Georgetown University.
The report calls for spending the money in a multitude of tracks: By tracing the modern-day descendants of enslaved people at Harvard. By building memorials and curriculum to honor and expose the past. By creating exchange programs between students and faculty members at Harvard and those at historically Black colleges and universities, and by collaborating with tribal colleges. And by forging partnerships to improve schools in the American South and the West Indies, where plantation owners and Boston Brahmins made their intertwined fortunes on the backs of the enslaved.
The recommendations are somewhat vague, purposely so, Harvard officials said, so that more care can be put into fulfilling them. Some descendants of the enslaved said talks had already begun to figure out how they could work together.
But the report carefully avoided treading on direct financial reparations for the descendants of enslaved people.
Reparations “means different things to different people, so fixating on that term, I think, can be counterproductive,” Tomiko Brown-Nagin, the committee chair, a professor of both law and history, and dean of the Harvard Radcliffe Institute, said in an interview.
She said one goal of the new endowed fund was to drive social mobility by closing gaps in educational opportunity. “The university is committed to deeply meaningful and sustained remedies that will endure in perpetuity,” she said. “Those remedies are focused on leveraging our expertise in education, which is consistent with our mission.”
Some descendants of the enslaved at Harvard, like Jordan Lloyd, found the university’s promises bittersweet.
Ms. Lloyd grew up in Boston wondering how her Black family had got there. While working as an actress, she paid her bills by waitressing at Harvard’s repertory theater, never suspecting that she was walking the same streets as an ancestor she did not know about, Cuba Vassall.
Harvard’s report says Cuba Vassall was enslaved by Penelope Royall Vassall, sister of Isaac Royall Jr., the slaveholding benefactor of Harvard Law School. The Royall family crest, with its sheaves of wheat, was a symbol of the law school until it was withdrawn in 2016, after 80 years, because of student protests. The student paper, The Harvard Crimson, now practically makes a game of finding the Royall crest extant on some university property.
Ms. Lloyd, who now lives in Los Angeles and works in film, learned about her ancestor from Carissa Chen, then an undergraduate researching descendants of the enslaved under the tutelage of a Harvard history professor, Sven Beckert.
Dr. Beckert, in turn, had been inspired by an investigation of slavery at Brown University that was started in 2003 by Ruth Simmons, the first Black president of an Ivy League school. Dr. Beckert and his students labored alone for three or four years, he recalled, until the Harvard administration first took notice around 2010.
Ms. Chen, now a Rhodes scholar, contacted Ms. Lloyd in 2020, around the time of the protests over the police killing of George Floyd. Ms. Lloyd was sickened over police brutality, she said in an interview. Knowing with such scholarly certainty where she came from made her feel better.
“I found a lot of peace and groundedness in it, and I was incredibly grateful,” she said.
But she also felt anger toward Harvard for not doing more earlier. “It feels like they’re hopping on a bandwagon,” she said. She tends to favor financial reparations, and says what Harvard does will be a “barometer” for others.
Her father, Dennis Earl Lloyd, has been in touch with Harvard and takes a gentler view. He wants Harvard to create educational opportunity for Black communities, not hand out money.
“What are you going to do, put a Cadillac in everyone’s garage?” said Mr. Lloyd, a developer and property owner.
Befitting a scholarly institution, Harvard’s 134-page report, which includes two appendices, is dense, detailed and even “shocking,” as the university’s president, Lawrence S. Bacow, said in an email announcing the initiative to students, faculty and staff.
It says that enslaved people were an “integral” part of the university in its early days. They lived in the president’s residence on the Cambridge, Mass., campus and were part of the fabric, almost invisible, of daily life.
“Enslaved men and women served Harvard presidents and professors and fed and cared for Harvard students,” the report says.
While New England’s image has been linked in popular culture to abolitionism, the report said, wealthy plantation owners and Harvard were mutually dependent.
“Well into the 19th century, the university and its donors benefited from extensive financial ties to slavery,” the report said. “These profitable financial relationships included, most notably, the beneficence of donors who accumulated their wealth through slave trading; from the labor of enslaved people on plantations in the Caribbean islands and in the American South; and from the Northern textile manufacturing industry, supplied with cotton grown by enslaved people held in bondage.”
In turn, the report said, the university profited from loans to Caribbean sugar planters, rum distillers and plantation suppliers, and from investments in cotton manufacturing.
Early attempts at integration met with stiff resistance from Harvard leaders, who prized being a school for the white upper crust, including wealthy white sons of the South, the report recounted.
“In 1850, Harvard’s medical school admitted three Black students but, after a group of white students and alumni objected, the school’s dean, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., expelled them,” it said.
Faculty members played a role in disseminating bogus theories of racial differences that were used to justify racial segregation and to underpin Nazi Germany’s extermination of “undesirable” populations.
“In the 19th century, Harvard had begun to amass human anatomical specimens, including the bodies of enslaved people, that would, in the hands of the university’s prominent scientific authorities, become central to the promotion of so-called race science at Harvard and other American institutions,” the report said.
The bitter fruit of those race scientists remains part of Harvard’s living legacy, and is still contested.
The 19th-century naturalist and Harvard professor Louis Agassiz commissioned daguerreotype portraits of enslaved people in an attempt to prove their inferiority.
The report does not mention that Tamara Lanier, a woman who has traced her ancestry to one of those people, called Renty, had challenged Harvard’s ownership of the portraits, saying that the images of Renty and his daughter Delia, taken under duress, are the spoils of theft and should be turned over to her.
Until the 1960s, the report notes, the legacy of slavery lived on in the paucity of Black students admitted to Harvard.
“During the five decades between 1890 and 1940, approximately 160 Blacks attended Harvard College, or an average of about three per year, 30 per decade,” the report said. “In 1960, some nine Black men numbered among the 1,212 freshman matriculants to Harvard College, and that figure represented a vast improvement over the prior decades.”
In the Class of 2025, 18 percent of the 1,968 admitted students identified as African American or Black.
Dr. Beckert, the Harvard history professor, who sat on the committee that produced the report, said it was deeply meaningful to study racism at his own institution.
“We cannot move forward on many of the issues that divide the nation today,” he said, “without coming to engage them at the very place where you find yourself.”
