"The United Nations Security Council on Monday passed its first resolution calling for a Gaza cease-fire after four failed attempts. The United States abstained, allowing it to pass. The resolution, backed by 14 nations including China and Russia, demands an immediate cease-fire during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan and the release of all hostages. Four previous cease-fire resolutions had failed, including one proposed by the United States on Friday. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant is in Washington this week, as the Biden administration presses Israel not to attack the southern Gaza city of Rafah. Vice President Harris told ABC’s “This Week” that such an offensive “would be a huge mistake,” with more than a million people sheltering in the city. Asked whether there would be “consequences” from the United States for an Israeli operation in Rafah, she said, “I am ruling out nothing.”

A separate Israeli delegation, which includes Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer and national security adviser Tzachi Hanegbi, was set to depart Israel Monday evening, said an Israeli official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the schedule has not been made public. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the delegation he would cancel their trip if the United States did not veto the resolution, according to a statement from the prime minister’s office."
