“JERUSALEM — The Israeli military entered al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest, in what the Israel Defense Forces called a “precise and targeted operation against Hamas.” A doctor at the hospital described to The Washington Post “continuous shootings and bombings around the hospital.” The director of Gaza’s hospitals, Mohammed Zaqout, said at least 650 patients remain inside the hospital, alongside members of staff and thousands of displaced Gazans. Israel and the United States have asserted that Hamas is using hospitals, including al-Shifa, and the tunnels underneath them for their military operations. Hamas has denied this and accused the White House of giving “a green light” for the operation. An Israeli military statement said troops “encountered explosives and terrorist squads” in the fight for entry, and a military-run outlet said forces searching the hospital had so far not found any sign of hostages on the site. Details of the raid, which the IDF said began around 2 a.m. local time, remain murky due to ongoing communications outages, Israeli bombardments and ground fighting.“
